It was a cold, bitter night as the usually crowded local tavern was rather quiet except for a few patrons who were seeking warmth against the cold. Most who braved the snowstorm were regulars who came to find solace to their problems for a moment of comradeship among friendly faces.
He was sitting alone, a strange in the community seeking to escapade the grayness of the evening. He was here on a business trip and did not know anyone in town just a rather non-extraordinary male of medium height and looks who easily blended in a crowd due to his average ness and his shy demeanor. Just like the people who frequent the facility, seeking the elusive thing called love.
Then she appeared like a ray of sunshine in this dismal setting. Her wavy golden hair caught the lights, shining directly in his eyes blinding him as she removed her wet woolen hat. She took a seat at a booth across him after removing her long coat as she ordered a drink to remove the chill from her bones from the waitress who took her order.
Trying not to stare at her, he takes a drink of his whiskey on the rocks as his hands idly plays with the nearby napkin. She had the look of familiarity associated with her, the girl next door look. Nothing threatening about her, the one you can be just oneself without the need to impress. Someone safe and yet dependable in a crisis he appeared to be.
Her eyes happened to glance over to his direction, as she had the feeling that she was being watched. She looked him over and decided that he was all right. Not overly good looking but average built and had a seriousness that most males did not carry. Their eyes met for a slight moment as they tried to pretend they were not checking each other but a slight smile prevailed on their faces.
She thought to herself that he had a nice smile that brought a certain sparkle in his eyes when he flashed it. A smile full of warmth and appeal that was not painted or plastered on a face, it had character just like the person behind it. He might be worth getting to know as the night progress. She got up from her booth and slowly approaches his table.
"Hi, I could not help but noticed that we were both staring at each other just now. Would you like to dance?", as she stands right in front of him with a smile.
"Sure but Im not a good dancer. I hope you did not mind me staring at you just now.", as he gets up as she takes his hand and helps him to his feet as they head to the dance floor.
"No problem, by the way Im Sophie.", as they dance side by side.
"Nice to meet you Sophie, Im Ben. You dance very well."
"So do you, Ben. So what brings you out on a snowy night like this?"
"I did not feel like being cooped up in a hotel room tonight. Im in town on business for a few weeks."
"I understand about being cooped up. So how do you like our town despite the snow?"
"Actually what I have seen is rather nice and I do like snow. There is something pristine about a snowstorm that is refreshing and invigorating."
"And a sense of tranquility as the snow falls there is nothing quite like it."
"I understand that sentiment but most would think we were crazy to think that way. How about you Sophie, what brings you out on a night like this?"
"A sense of restlessness and wanting to walk as the snow falls. Having the snow falling on oneself and just breathing the coolness against ones face." , as the song finishes as they slowly walk back to their seats.
"The crispness making you glad you are alive.", as they walk back to her booth.
"You can join me if you wish Ben.", as she sits down on the booth moving her coat closer to her.
"If it would not be any trouble Sophie."
"No trouble at all Ben. I could do with the company.", as he gets his drink and coat and joins her.
They talked for several hours laughing at each others jokes and basically just enjoying each others conversation. They did not need to pretend to be something they were not as each appreciate what the other had to offer. Time just flew between them as a new friendship was formed over drinks and fellowship.
It was time to leave, as they left hand in hand as they headed out to the still snowy nightfall. Grabbing his hands, she pulls him towards the empty park across the street where they made snow angels on the freshly fallen snow like young children. Laughing and being carefree not caring what other people would say or think.
"I have not done this since I was a kid Sophie.", as he lays in the snow.
"Dont you feel like a kid again?", as she lays next to him.
"Definitely Sophie, I would not think of doing this without you. Thank you for recapturing my youth.", as he smiles at her.
"m glad you are enjoying yourself.", as she quickly gets up hiding a snowball she had just made. She then goes over to him and hits him with the snowball and runs.
"Unfair Sophie. You are asking for it.", as he gets up and runs after her and catches her in his arms as the both are out of breath.
"I surrender.", as he takes a handful of snow in one of his hands while still holding her.
"You surrender to what Sophie?", as he holds the snow in front of her face.
"I promise to behave.", as she flashes him a smile.
"I do not think so.", as he rubs her face in the snow and laughs.
"Your a meanie Ben.", as she shakes the excess snow from her face and then scoops up some snow and aims at him.
"Hey like you are any better Sophie.", as the two of them attack each other with the snow.
"Im only protecting myself."
"Yeah right like you was not the one that started this.", as they continue shoving snow down each other others backs as they eventually fell on top of the snow with Ben landing on top of Sophie.
"Maybe I did start it, Ben.", she whispers quietly as she stares at his crystal blue eyes.
"Sophie.", he responds quietly as he brushes a stray curl from her face.
"Yes Ben?", as their cold lips met seeking hungrily the warmth that was waiting inside them as they threw their arms around each others necks bringing them closer.
"Sophie, I did no mean to do that. Its not that I did not want to kiss you but I do not want you to think that Im taking advantage of you.", as he gets up and helps her up.
"Ben I understand I wanted you to kiss me. I do not regret our kiss.", as she faces him.
"But we barely know each other Sophie."
"Ben do not over analyze the situation, it was a kiss and a very nice one as it is."
"I enjoyed our kiss very much Sophie. I hope we can do it again soon."
"If you play your cards right, you might be allowed Ben.", she laughs as she takes his arms as they walk.
"I just have to hope I have the right card then.", as they walk on the quiet street.
"You never know. Lets go take a look at that display across the street.", as she lets goes of his hands as she runs across the street blindly.
Out of nowhere we see a car speeding down the street. The screeching of tires is heard as it tries to stop but no avail and then a loud scream of death is heard from Sophies voice. She died on contact as the car threw her body 20 feet from the car. He rushes over in a daze as he puts her head on his lap as he sees that she is dead. Tears fall from his eyes as he holds her limp dead body as he lays a kiss on her cheek.
The sounds of sirens are heard in the distance, as he is lost in his own world of grief. The image of their kiss locked in his mind and what if prevail but is no longer a possibility. One impossible night full of possibilities but ended in tragedy.
